Abstract

The Dounreay Site Restoration Plan, spanning 40–60 years, necessitates the construction of modern waste treatment and storage facilities to manage the increased volume of waste arisings from decommissioning and waste retrieval projects. However in the meantime optimum use must be made of the existing D2001 Solid Intermediate Level Waste processing facility, which was built in support of the past UK fast reactor research and development programme at Dounreay. This paper describes the operational history of the facility and the major improvements effected in the last four years to improve reliability, productivity and meet current nuclear safety and engineering standards.
