Abstract

In order to find optimum melting conditions of miscellaneous low-level radioactive waste (LLW) for preparation of waste packages for disposal, melting tests of simulated miscellaneous LLW were carried out by using a melting system with plasma torch of a non-transfer type. Radionuclides distribution, chemical composition and compressive strength of the solidified products were investigated. It was found that each of the solidified products was almost homogeneous. Residual fractions of 137Cs in solidified products were influenced by the change of heating time and chemical composition of solidified products. On the contrary, almost all of the 152Eu remained in the solidified products. The solidified product possessed adequate mechanical strength.
