The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program was created to meet the demand for innovative technologies for hazardous waste treatment. The primary mission of the SITE Program is to expedite the cleanup of sites on the National Priorities List (NPL). These sites often have multiple contaminants in soil and groundwater, and few cleanup options exist. To accomplish this mission, the SITE Program seeks to advance the development, implementation and commercialization of innovative technologies for hazardous waste characterization and remediation. Innovative technologies are field-tested on hazardous waste materials and engineering and economic data are gathered to assess the technology’s performance, cost, and applicability.

The SITE Program has two components: the Demonstration Program and the Measuring and Monitoring Technologies Program (MMTP). The Demonstration Program focuses on evaluation of full-scale innovative technologies for site remediation. The MMTP conducts evaluations of innovative measuring and monitoring technologies under field conditions. This paper outlines the SITE Program’s dynamics and impact on innovative technology development and use.
