A comparison is made between numerical simulations and experimental data for soot and water vapor concentration in a JP-8 fire. Soot concentration depends on soot generated/destroyed per unit flame area (subgrid soot model) and the overall flame area per unit volume (turbulence treatment). Two different turbulence treatments, a steady RANS variant and an unsteady LES variant, are used to determine the effect of overall flame area per unit volume. The results indicate that the difference in the two turbulence treatments is greater than the difference between the data and either approach.
