The interactive influence of the performance of an annular, axial diffuser on axial fan selection has been studied. A calculational model based on the empirical literature for such diffusers has been formulated. This model has been used to establish lower limits on fan size selection for a given set of performance requirements, subject to minimum requirements for static efficiency and upper limits on the size of a diffuser relative to fan size. Trade-off studies between fan size and diffuser size are presented for a range of performance requirements and hub-to-tip diameter ratios.
