This paper describes a development and an evaluation of an optical blade vibration monitoring system applicable to gas turbine engine high pressure turbine blading.

The system uses high intensity He-Ne lasers, optical fibers and associated electronics, and can monitor rotor blade vibration under engine running conditions. With a combined water and air probe cooling system, it can be used for monitoring turbine blade vibration at 1300 degree C range gas temperature.

The system was applied to actual gas turbine engines and has demonstrated it’s effectiveness as a useful tool for gas turbine blade vibration evaluation.
