This paper describes a technique for finding the radial distributions of flow angle and stage specific work which yield, subject to user-specified constraints, the maximum value of integrated adiabatic efficiency for a turbine stage. The optimization procedure is direct in that the distributions are specified as polynomials. A pattern search is employed to determine the values of the polynomial coefficients which yield the desired conditions. The overall technique is intended to supplement the preliminary phase of axial flow gas turbine design.
