The development of aero-derived industrial and marine gas turbines over the past twenty years is reviewed in relation to changes in market requirements. The performance of the RB.211 industrial engine is discussed and the forward development prospects are examined. The efficiency is compared with the efficiencies to be expected from more complex cycles and from Diesel engines.
