Hovercraft operate in a very hostile environment, subject to continuous spray conditions. In salt water or dusty environments, this can lead to rapid engine performance deterioration. The need for a cost effective Engine Health Monitoring (EHM) system operable by the crew, preferably on-board, clearly existed. Such a system was developed for the Bell Aerospace Canada Voyageur hovercraft making use of only existing engine instrumentation in conjunction with a programmable calculator. This approach was readily accepted by both craft operators and maintenance personnel, and has demonstrated the ability to detect engine problems before severe damage occurs.
