Exxon’s Baytown Refinery fired its first gas turbine in July of 1958. At the present time, there are seven generator sets, totaling 120 megawatts, and five process drivers, totaling 38,000 hp inservice. Because of the critical nature of one process, we have installed a 100-percent spare backup gas turbine and compressor. The topics that will be discussed in this paper are those experienced during the last 25,000 hr of more than 180,000 hr of operation. None of these problems were catastrophic in nature but were new to our complex. Hopefully, this discussion will provide other users of gas turbines some insight.
