Low cost, forged turbine rotor technology has been under development since 1972. Several significant advancements have been made in materials and processing technology which, when applied to forged integral bladed turbine rotors, provides the opportunity to increase turbine inlet temperature by as much a 100 C. These technologies include the GATORIZING® forging process, the directional recrystallization heat treat process, and the rapidly solidified powder metallurgy process. The application of these technologies to uncooled integral bladed metal turbine rotors and to hybrid ceramic bladed rotors is discussed.
