Designed by SEDAM and built in 1975–1977, the Naviplane N500 hovercraft started the Boulogne-Dover cross-channel service in mid-’78. The craft is powered by five AVCO-Lycoming TF40 gas turbines driving the three propellers and two lift fans and two KHD T216 APU’s for the electric power supply. The engineering of the gas turbines’ installation is the contribution of Klöeckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD) to the total craft concept of SEDAM. In describing the installation features, the paper’s accent is placed on interface problems, the solutions chosen and the results obtained. These problems include air intake and exhaust systems, silencing, power package suspension and shaft line analyses, fuel and electric power supply and operational control.
