The paper outlines the position of the areo gas turbine engine as applied to the marine field, and illustrates the relationship of this work to the development of the Air Cushion Vehicle (Hovercraft) in Britain. A brief description is given of the installation of the Marine Gnome gas turbine in the SRN.5/6 Hovercraft and illustrates how the advent of these small craft suddenly resulted in extensive engine usage, together with the imposition of a wide variety of operating problems; some of the measures taken to keep pace from the engine viewpoint are covered in detail. Finally, there is a glimpse at second generation Hovercraft and the application of the Marine Proteus to these.
