The first successful CODAG-powered vessel to be built in the United States presented some interesting and unique control requirements and problems. The requirements were that the vessel speed must be the same for a particular handle position regardless of the propulsion machinery being used; and when operating as CODAG, the gas turbine and the diesel engine were to share the load under all operating conditions proportionate to their load-carrying ability. The design approach to solving this problem, including necessary data and curves, is outlined and explained in detail. While a thorough engineering job was done, there are always problems encountered in commissioning and tuning such a control system. The problems, solutions to these problems, and suggested improvements for a future control system are part of the discussion.
