Turbine vanes and blades are life-limited by one of three primary failure modes: creep, corrosion, and thermal fatigue. All of these modes are dependent upon the turbine inlet temperature; either the absolute temperature, or its rate of change. The development of better materials and the use of air cooling techniques have done much to reduce creep and thermal fatigue, but additional materials and coating development are required to solve the corrosion problem.
