A review of the function of the Maritime Administration in fostering the development of a merchant marine is given. Three major items of gas-turbine development are covered. Their requirements, methods proposed by contractors to meet these requirements, present status and future development potential are discussed as part of the overall goal of making the American merchant marine a strong competitor in the field of world trade.
