In the recent past, concerns have been raised regarding Gas Turbines (GTs) causing safety issues in offshore applications. Specifically the argument raised encompass a possible explosion due to a combination of a presence of a gas leak and exposed GT hot surfaces and/or ingested combustible. The above argument is made despite the thousands of GTs in offshore operation. This document provides a high level assessment of the arguments made on the basis of today’s state-of-the-art installations, assuming proper maintenance and general adherence to established safety protocols. It is based on the experience of designing and supporting the operation of hundreds of offshore gas turbine installations.
