Typical silencer in heavy industrial compressor systems consist of pressure vessels with baffles filled with mineral wool or similar material. With the presented silencer the sound damping is achieved with an acoustic liner covered with a multi-layer steel wire mesh. This special material makes it possible to build optimized silencers with very good damping characteristic. The transmission loss is optimized according to the emission spectra of the compressor. The blocking of the free passage is reduced so that an inline configuration without an additional pressure vessel can be achieved. Tests were performed with an external sound source and with a 10 MW compressor as sound source. This paper summarizes the design of the silencer and a possibility for sound measurements with flow during a shop test.
