An experimental and analytical investigation of two automotive centrifugal compressors with a radial vaneless diffusers has been conducted. Static pressure measurements together with 1-D flow assumptions have been used to determine the fluid properties throughout the diffuser and this has provided quantitative estimates of the location and value of the losses occurring in this region.

A correlation of diffuser loss for the two specific geometry’s has been developed. This correlation has been used to extend a 1-D prediction technique to include the vaneless diffuser, enabling the operating range and performance of the diffuser to be predicted from the geometry.
