Propagation of pressure fluctuation in steam piping and feedwater lines may cause many problems in piping operation. The problems are generated either at the pump discharge both for gas and liquid medium or after opening or closing of safety relief valves of the overpressure protection. All these events are classified as expected steam / water hammer. Most dangerous is the case of unexpected water hammer caused by the sudden collapse of steam or air bubble due to man-induced error, for example bad venting or draining or cavitation effects in feedwater pump. In this paper the case of opening and closing of secondary circuit safety relief valves of NPPs with Russian type of PWR called VVER (water-water energy reactor) 1000 MW is discussed.
