A common weak spot of RANS turbulence models is that one turbulence scale is determined from the dissipation rate ε (or some other turbulence quantity). An improved transport equation for ε is presented. It is valid in both high and low Reynolds number flow regions. The new ε-equation is combined with a cubic eddy-viscosity model. The complete model is applied to fully developed channel and pipe flows, the turbulent plane and round jet, a backward-facing step flow and to heat transfer predictions with turbulent impinging jets. The presented model yields accurate results for all these test cases (in particular the plane jet–round jet anomaly is resolved).
