Abstract
This work shows the results of a series of tests conducted at laboratory scale, on spills of Orimulsion® on different types of soils. Several physical procesess such as spreading, infiltration, evaporation, adherence, and capillarity were analyzed. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results obtained from a formulation based on the viscous fluids spreading equations developed by Huppert [1]. Based on the knowledge gained on the behavior of Orimulsion® spills on soil, it will be possible to select the most suitable techniques to remove the product. In the tests conducted on the behavior of confined Orimulsion® spills on soil, equations for spills both in horizontal and inclined surfaces were validated and calibrated. Such equations provide an excellent adjustment and are a good representation of the phenomenon.
