This paper investigates the efforts to improve the reliability of wind turbines through the physics-of-failure based approach. Critical subassemblies of modern wind turbines are highlighted and their current reliability is reported. The application of the physics-of-failure based reliability assessment is presented for improving the performance of a wind turbine’s blades, gearbox, and converter subassemblies.
