A new mass measurement using a damped dynamic vibration absorber is developed. A mass-spring system with a dynamic vibration absorber has a fixed point through which all the frequency response curves pass independently of damping in the absorber. The proposed method of measurement utilizes this fixed point to estimate mass independently of damping in the absorber. The principle of measurement was described based on a mathematical model. An experimental apparatus based on the principles was fabricated. Mass measurement was carried out with the apparatus. The measurement results demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed method.
