Abstract

Stress is marked as one of the key challenges that result in several physical and mental health problems for individuals. These mental and physical health problems can be alleviated by diaphragmatic breathing. Traditionally, for some patients, diaphragmatic breathing was taught and guided by healthcare practitioners, which could increase the cost associated with this training. For this reason, a technology-based diaphragmatic breathing device is necessary. This study presents a novel portable diaphragmatic breathing assistance device. An algorithm is developed to provide physical guidance during the process of inhalation and exhalation. This study also evaluates the device’s effectiveness in providing physical guidance throughout the breathing cycles. By offering assistive support during inhalation and exhalation, this device has the potential to reduce stress-related physical and mental illness and decrease the workload for health professionals.
